ESWT

Shockwave treatment is a non-invasive therapeutic intervention for the treatment of a range of soft tissue disorders, helping to improve blood supply, increase cell proliferation and tissue repair. Patients benefit from effective results without the need for invasive surgical procedures and postoperative pain.

What is ESWT or Shockwave Therapy?

Extracorporeal shockwave therapy describes a form of non-surgical, minimally invasive treatment which works by delivering impulses of energy targeted to specific injured soft tissue structures to offer effective pain relief and accelerate the healing process. This form of treatment is often referred to as shockwave therapy, as the term extracorporeal itself, simply means outside of the body.
Shockwave therapy is a frequently opted form of treatment not only in physiotherapy clinics but also in other disciplines such as orthopaedics, urology, sports medicine and veterinary medicine.

How Does Shockwave Therapy Work?

This type of therapy provides a mechanical rather than electrical form of energy; when applied to the affected area, it delivers low energy, audible sound waves which pass through the skin and increase localised blood flow. The treatment essentially works by causing minor trauma to the tissue, this prompts the body to initiate the healing process and send blood and nutrients to the affected area which provides a faster healing rate and pain relief.

Application

The treatment is applied by means of a probe which is pressed onto the skin to deliver shock waves to the affected area, subsequently triggering the body’s anti-inflammatory response and increasing the blood flow to the area.

Is It Painful?

Some people may experience mild discomfort during the application, it is not however, commonly described as a painful treatment.

What Can Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy Treat?

Shockwave therapy can be used for the following treatments:

Can Anyone Be Treated?

Although this form of treatment is suitable for many people, there are some exceptions where shockwave therapy is unsuitable, such as for pregnant women, pre-existing health conditions and people taking certain medications. Suitability will be discussed with a healthcare professional prior to any form of treatment.

How Many Sessions Are Needed?

The number of sessions needed usually depends on the individual, the average, however, is around 3 sessions at 1 to 2-week intervals.

Following Treatment

Some people may notice some redness and swelling following treatment, there may also be some tenderness. Others may notice an immediate improvement, although for many it may take several weeks to achieve noticeable results.
