Well anyone with vascular risk factors doing any exercise that puts their neck or blood vessels under strain are at risk. this is not specific to yoga. There has been a debate for years about neck manipulation for the same reason. Some people have tighter arteries in th…eir necks either genetically or because of cholesterol deposits. The best advice is to listen to your body and not to hold extremes of posture for too long especially at the neck.
So my opinion? Yoga can kill but so can lots of other things! Respectful movement and exercise is definitely to be promoted!

The big question for health care professionals is how to predict who will have a short episode of back pain and who is likely to have prolonged disabling pain that ruins lives, job prospects, relationships and requires expensive health usage?
This study is one on many that identify three main factors: health status, your coping ability and psychiatric illness as factors that may predict a chronic pain pattern unless changed.

There is good news in this as if we all try to stay fit and health (exercise a little and watch weight gain) and have a positive outlook on life our chances of having long term problems reduce. In reality, it is not quite as easy as this but coping ability and fear of movement have consistently been identified as the main predictors of poor outcomes.

The main take home message? Take control of the problem (e.g back pain) and use health care professionals to help you find a solution to the problem. Staying fit, healthy and strong reaps dividents when fighting pain.

Ok – this may be a daft article. Forgive me! But there is evidence that balance training changes outcomes when treating affected lower limb joints. We get all of our patients up onto wobble boards. Those with fast reactions are better able to take the load and strain that goes through joints when we’re on unstable terrain (like paths, commons, uneven pavements, jumping off bus steps etc). So this …mildly insane article has incorporated it into footwear. We’re not endorsing the footwear (never seen a pair!) but it is interesting that balance can help joint pain. Try standing on 1 leg today with your eyes shut and see how good you are!
